MAUI and Utrecht Network: Global Connections Through Student Mobility
MAUI and Utrecht Network: Building Global Connections Through Student Mobility
In today’s international higher education landscape, university networks play a key role in creating meaningful opportunities for academic exchange, intercultural dialogue, and global collaboration. Among these long-standing partnerships, Mid-America Universities International (MAUI) stands out as one of the most established U.S. partners of the Utrecht Network, fostering transatlantic cooperation between American and European universities for decades.
Dan Barker serves as the Program Coordinator for MAUI (midamericauniversities.org), overseeing the exchange relationships between all MAUI member institutions and their international partners, including universities within the Utrecht Network. Based at Oklahoma State University, he works closely with institutions across the consortium to support student mobility and strengthen collaboration between American and European universities.
Founded in 1975, MAUI brings together more than twenty universities across the American Midwest with the shared mission of promoting international education, study abroad opportunities, and institutional partnerships worldwide. Through its collaboration with the Utrecht Network, MAUI provides U.S. students with access to a wide range of European partner universities while strengthening long-term academic relationships across both networks.
In his role, Barker helps coordinate exchange initiatives between MAUI institutions and European partner universities, supporting both outgoing American students interested in studying abroad in Europe and incoming international students arriving in the United States. His work involves maintaining strong institutional partnerships while facilitating opportunities that align with students’ academic goals and intercultural learning experiences.

Beyond Academics: Creating a Sense of Community
According to Barker, one of the defining aspects of the American university experience for international students is the strong sense of community developed within campus life. International mobility, he explains, is not only about academics or administrative processes, but also about making students feel welcomed, supported, and fully integrated into their new environment.
This student-centered approach is reflected in the feedback received from many European exchange students participating in MAUI-Utrecht programs. Students frequently highlight the welcoming atmosphere of U.S. campuses, the interactive teaching style often found in American classrooms, and the unique cultural dimensions of campus life. Traditions such as homecoming events, student activities, collegiate sports, and everyday social interaction contribute to an experience that many students describe as transformative both personally and professionally.
The partnership between Mid-America Universities International (MAUI) and Utrecht Network demonstrates how international university networks can move beyond mobility itself to build long-lasting academic communities, encourage intercultural understanding, and prepare students to operate in increasingly global professional and educational contexts
