Educators Explore Virtual Exchange and Blended Mobility for Sustainability
Utrecht Network Educators Explore Virtual Exchange and Blended Mobility for Sustainability
Last week, the Utrecht Network brought together 19 educators from 13 countries for an international blended training workshop focused on Virtual Exchange and Blended Mobility for Sustainability. The programme was designed and facilitated by Prof. Robert O'Dowd of Universidad de León.
The initiative combined three online sessions, held on 5, 7 and 12 May, with a two-day in-person workshop in Brussels on 21–22 May. In doing so, the programme mirrored the very teaching methodology it aimed to promote: a blended learning experience that integrates online collaboration with face-to-face engagement.
Participants came from a wide range of academic disciplines, including engineering, natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities. Together, they explored how Virtual Exchange (VE/COIL) and Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs) can be developed around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), creating opportunities for students to collaborate across cultures and disciplines while addressing real-world sustainability challenges.

Throughout the workshop, educators engaged with key topics such as the design of sustainability-focused virtual exchange activities, the management of intercultural and organisational challenges in international collaboration, and the development of assessment frameworks for intercultural and sustainability competences.
The programme concluded with participants presenting and negotiating concrete project ideas with new international partners from across the Utrecht Network, laying the groundwork for future collaborative initiatives.
By sponsoring one participant from each member university, the Utrecht Network reaffirmed its commitment to educator mobility and professional development as drivers of innovation in higher education. The network now looks forward to seeing the new projects and partnerships that will emerge from these exchanges.
